What you need to know about the Bahamas Reopening.

Bahamas Reopening Update

Hi All. I hope everyone has been doing okay through the Corona/Covid 19 pandemic. As you know this pandemic has traveled the globe affecting many countries including us here in the Bahamas. The Bahamas is one of the most popular Island destinations. We too have been affected by Covid 19. All things considered, my personal opinion is that we have fared pretty well overall.

Tourism is the main industry and many people are looking forward to the Borders reopening so they can get back to supporting themselves and their families. Many visitors are also looking forward to traveling after many have been under stay at home orders to varying degrees since March.

The Bahamian Government is taking a phased approach to reopening, keeping everyone’s safety as a priority. Over the last few weeks they have moved carefully on the domestic side of things. Domestically we’ve had more commercial and social activity in phases over the last few weeks. Domestic only commercial flights will resume on June 8th 2020.

When will The Bahamas reopen?

The target date for reopening the international border is July 1st 2020. Please note this is a target, it’s not set in stone. This date may be changed based on trends with the Virus.

___________

Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism website on May 29th 2020:

“NASSAU, Bahamas, May 28, 2020 – The Bahamas Prime Minister, The Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, this week, announced initial plans to reinstate tourism to the country. Extensive health and safety protocols are currently being finalized with a target date of July 1 to reopen to commercial travel. Additionally, American Airlines has just announced that the airline will resume international flights to Nassau and Exuma beginning July 7.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation is continuing to follow guidance from the Bahamas Ministry of Health and other government agencies pertaining to the country’s Preparedness and Response Plan for COVID-19. A Tourism Readiness and Recovery Committee has been established among public and private sector partners to develop a collaborative plan for reopening. The committee collected and considered feedback from every type of business and tourism touchpoint – from airlines and cruise ports, to hotels, taxi drivers, tour operators and retailers, to name a few. The intent is to provide health and safety guidelines and protocols to be followed consistently across the country that allow businesses to protect employees and guests.

At this point in time, the July 1 reopening date is tentative and subject to change based on COVID-19 trends, namely, if there is a deterioration in improvement or if government and health organizations determine that the protocols and procedures are not in place sufficiently to warrant an opening. “

For travelers this means there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel, so stay updated with your local authorities, The Bahamians Ministry of Tourism and airlines for more information on when you will be able to travel. Hopefully soon we will all be able to get back to the beautiful beaches, destination weddings, family vacations and the people we love!
